Founded in 1966 and spread across 133 acres in Griffith Park, the zoo is a sanctuary for more than 2,200 animals, covering over 270 species. Its noteworthy focus is on the care of over 60 endangered species, including a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

The zoo's mission extends beyond displaying animals, strongly focusing on conservation, research, and education. It actively engages in animal care and promotes environmental learning. Known for its substantial role in conservation science, the L.A. Zoo actively participates in international efforts to preserve wildlife and restore habitats. Its diverse educational programs are designed to foster environmental consciousness and responsibility among visitors of all age groups.
