#OnThisDay in 1633, English settlers boarded the Ark and the Dove and departed the Isle of Wight for the Province of Maryland. The year previously, King Charles I had issued the Charter of Maryland, granting Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, and his heirs land in the New World. Cecil’s father, George Calvert, had earlier applied for the charter but passed away before it was officially granted.

Lord Baltimore, himself a convert to Catholicism, hoped to create a haven for English Catholics and lay the groundwork for religious toleration. Lord Baltimore’s brother, Leonard Calvert, accompanied the settlers on the journey and served as the first proprietary governor of the Province of Maryland. After a four-month voyage, the settlers landed on St. Clement’s Island off the northern shore of the Potomac on March 25, 1634, thereafter known as “Maryland Day.”
