For women in Maryland, the right to vote was a long, hard-earned struggle. #OnThisDay, 100 years ago, millions of women, including Marylanders, voted in the presidential election.

Congress had passed the 19th Amendment in June 1919, paving the way for women's right to vote. On February 24, 1920, Maryland became the fifth state to reject ratification of the amendment. While many Maryland women joined the national movement and demonstrated for their rights, it was ratification by 36 other states that brought women's suffrage to the state and to the rest of the country.

Maryland formally ratified the amendment in 1941 and it was certified in the state in 1958. To learn more about the history of voting rights in Maryland, visit the MCHC's interactive virtual exhibition, "Forgotten Fight: The Struggle for Voting Rights in Maryland."
