Register for our free virtual program: Fashion & Crisis: Looking to the Past to Understand How Fashion Might Change in the Future, tomorrow, May 20, at noon! Use the link in our bio.
Learn how fashion trends are born from times of crisis. For example, beginning in the mid 19th-century commodities like sugar, flour, and animal feed were packaged in sacks rather than wooden barrels. This material was almost always repurposed, and by the 1930s was a vital source of cotton for rural women to make clothing, housewares, and diapers for their families.
The woman in this image is modeling a blue dress made from sugar sacks. It was designed by graduate students in Home Economics students at the University of Alabama for a total cost of $3.18 (1940). #1930sfashion #fashion #futurefashion #historicfashion #historicalfashion #wwiifashion #covidfashion #virtualprogram
