The 124th running of the Maryland Hunt Cup, a world-renowned timber race, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Not sure exactly what a timber race is? MdHS has you covered on this #FilmFriday. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of the first running of the Maryland Hunt Cup. The program aired that year on Maryland Public Television. It combines rare footage of the race through the years along with interviews with jockeys, trainers, owners and family-connected participants throughout the history of this annual event. The documentary is narrated by legendary sports broadcaster Jim McKay, formerly of ABC Sports.
Some Marylanders of a certain age will be more familiar with the party surrounding this event, but this 45-minute documentary from 1994—now available in its entirety on MdHS’s Vimeo channel—will help clarify what all the celebrating was about.

Find this and other archival footage at the Maryland Historical Society’s channel on Vimeo.
