Happy #fashionfriday everyone! Here in Maryland we are in the midst of our typical end-of-summer heatwave, which has inspired this post! On the left is a wool bathing suit designed by Frederick-born Claire McCardell from the 1940s. On the right is a photograph from a 1941 edition of Vogue featuring a similar style by the designer. McCardell drew incredible media coverage with her scandalous form-fitting swimsuits that diverged from the typical padded and skirted designs on the market at the time. McCardell defended her unpadded, unlined swimsuits saying "Swimsuits are for swimming. If it's a dress you want, I have that, too." Despite the incredulity and reproach she faced with her 1943 swim line, it was met with an eager consumer market and found resounding success, so much so that it was backordered for several seasons. 1977.68.2 Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian McCardell #fashionfridays #fashionhistory #marylandhistory #vintagefashion #vintagestyle #1940s #1940sfashion #vintagebathingsuit #vintageswimwear #vintageswimsuit #1940sswimsuit #clairemccardell #summer #swimsuit #swimwear #vogue
