This #textiletuesday we take a closer look at mourning crape. Crape was often used for mourning clothing as wool fibers interwoven with the naturally shiny silk created a dull, crinkled texture that greatly reduced reflectivity. This dullness was desired as etiquette discouraged anything shiny or vibrant in a time of grief. This 1810s mourning dress features two types of crape, which have faded at different rates, giving them now a contrast that would have been much more subtle when worn in the Regency Era. Check out the Fashion Archive blog to see the full dress and learn more about the mourning traditions of the early 19th century! 1946.52.1 Gift of Mrs. Herman Cohn. #fashionhistory #fashionarchive #fashionarchives #regencyerafashion #1810s #1810sfashion #marylandhistory #mourning #mourningdress #mourningfashion #crape #black
