Hot, isn’t it? As we sweat through the dog days of summer here in #Maryland, thoughts of the beach are never far away. So this week, we took some early 20th century swimwear #OutoftheBox ! Here are examples of a boy and man’s swimsuit from around 1920. Unlike now, men wore these all-in-one style swimsuits made of heavy wool. The swimsuits often featured thin shoulder straps and double-layers around the bottom half. Talk about heat! The heavy material would not only be really #hot in the summer sun, but would lose its shape when wet. The now common swim trunk only style wasn’t widely worn until after WWII. Learn how to help us preserve pieces like these by checking out the #AdoptABox link in our bio! Left, 1981.63.1, Boy’s bathing suit belonging to Philander or Norwood Briscoe, Gift of Betsy Bacot.
