A cosmic connection! #Boeing and #NASA are testing a new docking system that will connect Boeing’s CST-100 #Starliner with the International Space Station. Using the Six-Degree-of-Freedom Dynamic Test System at Johnson Space Center (nasajohnson) in Houston, teams can prove the systems fit together flawlessly before heading off to space. Engineers designed the new docking system to be lighter and less complex than older systems, which aids in manufacturing. It also incorporates modern avionics. For example, docking systems have historically relied on vehicle thrusting to effect capture, but this uses an active Soft Capture System to eliminate the need for vehicle thrusting, greatly simplifying the job of flight controllers and #astronaut crews.
