On Tuesday, the Idaho National Guard and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes celebrated an additional agreement to their well-established relationship by partnering up to form a new accredited Military Science program to their Fort Hall School District curriculum.

Together, Maj. Gen. Michael Garshak, Idaho's adjutant general, and the tribe's council leader, Chairman Lee Juan Tyler, signed a memorandum of understanding that enables the Shoshone-Bannock Jr. and Sr. High School to add the Military Science program as an elective and utilize Idaho Army National Guard instructors.

“I’m always looking for opportunities to help the young men and women of Idaho develop knowledge and skills to put them on a path to success,” said Garshak. “We have reached out to school boards throughout the state and offered to conduct military leadership training, similar to ROTC programs, and the Shoshone-Bannock school board and Judge David Archuleta were very excited about the opportunity.”

The course will teach military customs and courtesies, military history, basic military skills, drill and ceremony, and provides military occupational specialty and career opportunities. The new elective will begin in January 2024 after returning to school from the holidays for the spring semester.
