Paul R. Gowen was born on this day in 1909 in Caldwell, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1926, then attended the University of Idaho for two years before being accepted into the Military Academy at West Point. He graduated near the top of his class in 1933 and was detailed to the Army Air Corps.

Lt. Paul R. Gowen was killed on July 11, 1938 while piloting a twin-engine B-10 bomber that crashed shortly after takeoff from Albrook Air Field in Panama. Gowen was killed instantly, but the navigator and radio operator crawled from the wreckage with burns. Gowen, 29 years of age, was buried with full military honors at the Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell.

In 1941, the War Department designated the new "Air Corps flying field" in Boise as Gowen Field in honor of Lieutenant Paul R. Gowen. In 1970, the Boise Airport officially adopted the name Boise Air Terminal at Gowen Field.
