Governor Brad Little signed a proclamation recognizing April as the month of the military child in a small ceremony in the Idaho Capitol’s Lincoln Auditorium April 1.

“We often recognize when our military members have to be ready to defend our country, but we also recognize that this is a team sport," Little said. "It takes a family to support that service member, and the strength, resilience, and courage these children represent does not go unnoticed.”

The Department of Defense has recognized April as the month of the military child since 1986. The month recognizes the important role children play in the Armed Forces community. More than two million American children have a parent or sibling serving in the military. More than 10,000 military children live in Idaho.

“The Idaho National Guard appreciates our military children and the importance they play in the success of our organization,” Maj. Gen. Michael Garshak said. “These kids are a critical part of our Guard family and the support they provide ensures our ability to accomplish the mission.”

Idaho residents can show their support for military children all month long by wearing purple on Fridays. In addition, the Idaho National Guard has several events planned throughout the month to honor military children. Military children and their families can participate in a family scavenger hunt, an art contest and a movie event at their local armories throughout the month.

During the ceremony, Little and Garshak were joined by several military children, including eight Idaho National Guard’s youth programs leaders. #idaho #idahonationalguard #militarychild #militarybrat #militarykids
