Sgt. Michael Denison was already well into his career as a sheriff deputy when he decided to join the Idaho Army National Guard as a 19K M1 Armor Crewman.

“It was something I always wanted to do and I already had a career started,” he said.

Denison is currently a deputy sheriff for Elmore County, where he works with his K9 partner, Beau. He previously worked for the Gooding Sheriff Department before moving to Mountain Home in 2016. He leads the county’s narcotic patrol division.

He also serves as a gunner in an M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank for A Company, 2-116th Combined Arms Battalion in the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team.

“It’s a nice break from my regular gig,” he said. “It’s like I’m showing up to a company of really good friends. Remember that show, ‘Cheers,’ a place where everybody knows your name? That’s how I feel about the Guard.”

His favorite thing about both positions is the same: the ability to help people. In the Idaho Army National Guard, he’s able to use his position as a sergeant and his knowledge of marksmanship and advance SWAT training to help his battle buddies shoot better on the range.

As a member of The National Guard, Denison has traveled to Romania, Canada and several U.S. states. He is also able to take advantage of TRICARE Reserve Select, which provides his family with health insurance for about a quarter of what it would cost him from his civilian employer.

The Idaho Army National Guard is currently hiring 19K M1 Armor Crewman with positions in multiple cities. Soldiers who enlist as a 19K are eligible to receive a $20,000 enlistment bonus, federal and state tuition assistance, the G.I. Bill, and other benefits. #idahonationalguard #idahoarmynationalguard #idarng #nationalguard #armynationalguard #k9 #k9handler #dogsofinsta #policedog #police #sheriff #lawenforcement #cop #k9police #coplife #citizensoldier #idaho #mountainhome #usarmy #army #soldier #tanker #19k #m1a2abrams
