Sit back, relax, and enjoy the soothing process of caramelizing onions 💆‍♀️🧅🔪#ad | There are two keys to making perfectly caramelized onions: 1) patience, and 2) a sharp, high quality knife for perfectly even slices that caramelize at an equal rate. We LOVE using our Zwilling_USA pro knives (especially the 8" chef's knife featured here) – it cuts through these onions (and just about anything else) like butter. (Seriously, they even slice through butternut squash with ease!) I especially love them in the new Le Blanc finish – the modern, white finish is a perfect fit for the style of my kitchen. More details on where to find in IG stories or https://bit.ly/3iYxTk5

The process of caramelizing onions is mostly self-explanatory from this video, but here's a more detailed step-by-step:

1. Slice about 1/2" off the root and stem ends of the onion. Lay the onion flat on a cutting board and slice in half. Lay one of the halves flat and slice into thin (but not too thin) from root to stem. Repeat with other onion half. If the onions are too thin, they will brown too quickly. Too thick and they'll take ages. Save this video and come back to it as a visual guide!

2. Heat a few tablespoons of butter (we used vegan) in a large skillet. Once melted, add 3 sliced onions to the skillet and reduce heat to low, stirring well.

3. Stir every once in a while, making sure that the onions do not burn. After about 10 minutes, stir in a pinch of salt and sugar (sugar helps the caramelization process). Continue cooking, stirring every so often, for 45-60 minutes over low heat, until caramelized and golden brown.

TIPS: don't be tempted to increase the heat. This is a low and slow process! If the onions start to stick to the pan, deglaze every so often with a splash of white wine (or water, but wine adds more flavor). Make a big batch and use them for just about anything (I love adding them to mashed potatoes at the holidays!)
