## Caption

The most common item baked at Sutter’s Fort in the 1840s was hardtack. Also known as “ship’s biscuits,”hardtack, which is baked at a low temperature for a long period of time, was a stable bread source for travelers and also sailors on ships. The ingredients you need to make your own: flour, water, and salt. In this video, Channey demonstrates baking hardtack in the outdoor brick oven outside the bakery at Sutter’s Fort. Want to see the oven in action? Visit on the third Saturday of each month for our monthly Demonstration Days! Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a California State Park located in the heart of Sacramento, California. #castateparks #hardtack #breadbaking #baking #suttersfort
