December 10th is National Lager Day! This day honors the most popular style of beer in the United States. For a little Sacramento beer history, Lewis Keseberg, the most infamous survivor of the Donner Party, founded one of the first breweries in Sacramento and he is credited with producing the first locally made lager beer in the city. Keseberg operated the Phoenix Brewery from 1853 to 1861 at the corner of 28th and M Streets, just a block away from Sutter’s Fort. His brewery was destroyed on December 10, 1861 during a massive flood, which struck the city the day prior. For today, Jared letterpress printed a beer related electrotype (copy of a woodcut). This cut, made 125-130 years ago, is from the Lewis Winter Collection. It is unmounted so it had to be placed on a block of wood to make it type high in order to print. The print depicts an older individual who could be a tavern keeper or brewer holding a couple brews. This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalLagerDay #lager #onthisday #sacramento #museum #History #letterpress #printingpress #printing
