May 1st is International Workers’ Day! For today, Jared letterpress printed union labels of different sizes for the Allied Printing Trades Council, which had its beginnings in Sacramento since the 1890s. These bugs are from the Bill Skarles Collection. This was printed with red oil base ink using our Washington hand press. The unionization of workers in the printing industry had its start in Sacramento in 1851. Printers and typesetters were tired of competition between the Placer Times and Sacramento Transcript newspapers, which lead to cost cutting measures, longer hours, and reduced wages. This led to many workers leaving those printing offices and starting their own newspaper: the Sacramento Daily Union. The Union published from March 1851 to January 1994. #SacHistoryMuseum #internationalworkersday #mayday #union #sacramento #museum #History #letterpress #printing
