## Caption

Since we are a museum, we can’t pass this day up. March 2nd is National Old Stuff Day! While using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852, Jared letterpress printed the oldest woodcut in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum. We are often asked, “What is the oldest woodcut in our print shop exhibit?” The Lewis Winter Collection contains the oldest cuts at our museum, considering Winter was in business from 1888 to 1910. But what about his predecessor though? In the Lewis Winter Collection , there is a small woodcut of an advertisement for C.H. Holmes, who had a photo and wood engraving office at 627 J Street in Sacramento in the 1880s. He was hired to be the State Engraver in 1886 and eventually sold his business two years later to Lewis Winter. This woodcut contains the carved words, “C.H. Holmes Engraver on Wood 627 J Street Sacto. Cal.” #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalOldStuffDay #oldstuff #art #sacramento #museum #History #letterpress #printing
