Alex is traveling to Matsuyama in Japan to study abroad as part of graduate school and Matsuyama is a Sister City to Sacramento! In an effort to promote international cooperation, the Sacramento History Museum has prepared a series of videos highlighting the similarities between Matsuyama and Sacramento.  In this video, Alex examines traditional bathing practices in early Sacramento and Matsuyama. Matsuyama is home to Dogo Onsen, one of the oldest Japanese hot springs. Dogo Onsen is also famous for being the main inspiration behind the Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away. While Dogo Onsen was under construction when Alex visited, it is still being visited by people worldwide.  Bathhouses in 1850s Sacramento, like the Eureka Bath House, were not nearly as luxurious as bathhouse owners were notorious for only changing the water every ten patrons and having their visitors share a single towel. #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramentostate #matsuyama #japan #california #sacramento #museum #History
