On February 15, 1820, Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts. She was an American social activist, abolitionist, and women’s rights activist who was one of the most visible leaders for the women’s suffrage movement. That fight for suffrage eventually lead to the ratification of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote on August 26, 1920, fourteen years after Susan’s death.

Susan B. Anthony helped grow the suffrage movement in California. She visited California with Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1871. They toured the state giving speeches at numerous locations including in Santa Cruz and at the home Sarah Wallis (first President of the California Woman Suffrage Association) in Palo Alto.

Susan would visit California several more times to campaign for suffrage. In 1896, she spoke at the Populist State Convention in Sacramento during the lead up to to an election that included a women’s suffrage ballot measure. Although this ballot measure failed, women were granted the right to vote in California on October 10, 1911.

In honor of Susan B. Anthony’s birthday, Zoey letterpress printed one of her favorite quotes by the suffrage leader. This was typeset in 48 point Cheltenham Bold font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
