On August 22, 1966, the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC) was founded when the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) merged together under the umbrella of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).

The United Farm Workers, under the leadership of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez, fought for labor and civil rights for Mexican-American and Filipino farm workers, especially those working on grape farms.

The fight for worker rights did not begin with Cesar Chavez when he tried to unionize farm workers in April 1962. Efforts to unionize California farmworkers began in the 1940s and 1950s during the Bracero Program. What really brought state and national attention to the movement, and what would ultimately lead to the formation of the United Farm Workers on this day in 1966, was the 25 day and 340 mile march Chavez led from the town of Delano to the State Capitol in Sacramento. The march began on March 17, 1966 with 75 Mexican and Filipino farmworkers to bring awareness of working conditions, low wages, and was intended to place pressure on grape growers and state lawmakers to answer the demands of the Mexican and Filipino farm workers.

The United Farm Workers continues to this day to fight for protections and labor rights of California farm workers.

For today, Jared letterpress printed a photo engraving from the Brett from Pennsylvania Collection. The print depicts an advertisement showing a woman grocery shopping and selecting grapes that are under a sign with the United Farm Workers logo, telling the viewer look for the union label. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
