April 29, 1912

On this day in 1912, the I Street Bridge in Sacramento opened for operation with the crossing of the Southern Pacific No. 19 train bound for San Francisco. The 900-foot-long double deck steel truss swing bridge was designed under the direction of Southern Pacific Railroad’s consulting engineer, John D. Isaacs, and was furnished by the American Bridge Company.

In 1912, the I Street Bridge was known as the Southern Pacific Bridge and cost about a million dollars to complete. This bridge replaced an old wooden bridge nearby and was, at the time it was built, the heaviest swing-span bridge in the world as it weighed over 10 million pounds.

The I Street Bridge crosses the Sacramento River just northwest of the Sacramento History Museum. The second photo is the view of the I Street Bridge from the 3rd floor of our Museum.
