April 19, 1880

On this day in 1880, a severe rainstorm hit Sacramento, setting the official record for a 24-hour period of rainfall in the city at 5.28 inches. Both the Sacramento and American Rivers rose significantly. Both the Sacramento Daily Record Union and The Daily Bee (now known as The Sacramento Bee) newspapers published stories of vigilant citizens ready to reinforce and repair the levees in case they gave way.

By the 22nd, the rain ceased enough for the rivers to lower. Sacramento did not flood but water did flow on the streets and had the appearance of “miniature rivers.” This record was eventually broken on October 24, 2021.
