November 5, 1936

On this day in 1936, a covered wagon pulled by 5 teams of oxen departed from Sutter’s Fort heading for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opening celebration that was set to take place one week later on November 12, 1936.

Sacramento's role in the celebration for the opening of the Bay Bridge was the “Progress of Transportation Pageant,” which consisted of a different form of transportation departing Sutter's Fort each day, at 27th and L Streets, and traveling to San Francisco for the opening. Modes of transportation leaving the Fort on other days included travelers on foot with pack animals, riders on horses, and a stagecoach. The pageant was sponsored by the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce.

This photograph shows the 5 team of oxen and wagon outside the south gate of Sutter’s Fort. Governor Frank Merriam was in attendance and is one of the men in the background to the left. Why can’t you see the brick walls of Sutter’s Fort? There was ivy growing on the walls of the Fort at this time and was feature at the park through the 1940s.
