It’sss Snake Week! 🐍 Encompassing World Snake Day on July 16th, this week is dedicated to learning how to coexist safely, appreciating snakes, and protecting species like the incredibly rare Louisiana pinesnake.   Meet just a few of our species-saving sssuperstars: Pretty Boy, Oreo, Honey Bunches, and of course, Noodle. These snakes are part of our Conservation Six program for the Louisiana pinesnake!   Pinesnakes are often mistaken for rattlesnakes. When scared or threatened, a Louisiana pinesnake will puff its body up, rear back into an “S” shape, and flatten its head. They’ll also rattle their tails, even though they don’t have a rattle. In leaf litter, it sounds just like a rattlesnake! And they have the loudest hiss of ANY snake, all to say, “Back off!” But it’s all for show! Pinesnakes are nonvenomous and simply want to be left alone. If you see one in the wild, give it space and respect. Snakes are friends! They help control pests and play a vital role in healthy ecosystems. 💚   With only 200 to 300 left in the wild, Louisiana pinesnakes are North America’s rarest snake. Our dedicated team at Memphis Zoo is helping save them through breeding, releases, and research, including the first reptile born from frozen semen and artificial insemination. #memphiszoo #snakeweek2025 #snake #pinesnake #animals
