The show in my flat opens TOMORROW!!! Details in profile.
.
When I left the city law firm 11 years ago to start a creative career, the idea of being an actual artist was really just a flight of fancy, especially as I was on my own with a baby and a toddler. My original plan was actually to be an interior designer, as I thought that was more likely to earn me money. But a couple of years later I was browsing in a gift shop when I started chatting to the owner, who also had an art gallery downstairs and I mentioned that I had always dreamed of being an artist. After showing her pictures of my work on my phone, to my utter surprise, she offered me a solo show at her gallery there and then!! OMG it was music to my ears! The only problem was, the day before I had also been offered my first interior design job AND I’d just been offered a teaching job, teaching colour for interior design at Chelsea College of Arts. .
.
I had to think fast about a subject for the show, as I hadn’t really painted properly for years. So I chose the theme of flying birds in ink on watercolour paper, because they represented me flying free from all the rubbish of the past that had got me into this position in the first place and yet with that sense of feeling strong and happy and focused. .
.
This picture really brings all of those things together - one of my flying hummingbirds, the interior design, the colour teaching and now a series of abstract paintings, called ‘Pieces of my Home’, which represent me landing in a beautiful place and finally being able to be creative in every way that I love. .
I hope to see lots of you this weekend and next!
