🦋A tale of two corporate girls ditching it all to become artists. 🦋
15 years ago I met this fabulous woman, Fi Garlick, who was working at MTV producing music videos. I was working as Head of Marketing and Business Development at a big City law firm. Both fantastic jobs, both earning great money. We were both in our mid thirties, single, no kids. BUT, we also both felt unfulfilled in our corporate worlds and wanted to become artists instead. We each decided to do it a different way. Fi resigned from her job and started an art foundation course at Falmouth art school, going on to do an art degree, but had no financial support. I decided to fund my art education by staying in my job and doing a short course instead at Camberwell UAL and then teaching myself. A mutual friend decided to film a documentary of our progress to see which path would work the best. After a few years, I felt ready to leave my job, take a couple more short courses and eventually launch. Both of us making the leap to working artists at about the same time. Both, in the end, with no money. Fi is now an award winning sculptor and ceramic artist in New Zealand and I have my shop in London. We are also both now middle-aged single mums - long story! And now we are both so much happier!! So in the end it didn’t matter which path we took. If you crave ditching your corporate career for something more fulfilling, do it whichever way works for you, but it is so worth doing. Go forth and create!! .
