Why is God swift to rescue some people out of adversity while others must continue to endure? Why are some healed but others required to live with their infirmities?

In our Book of Mormon study this week, we read that Alma and Amulek were made to witness as innocent believers were executed by fire. When Amulek asked why they could not call upon the powers of heaven to rescue them, Alma told him he was constrained not to intervene, for “the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that [the people] may do this thing … that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just” (Alma 14:11).

When you fall to your knees and implore the Lord to rescue you from your sufferings, His answer is never no. He will resolve and restore all things, and He will reward your obedience—today or in eternity, sooner or later. But maybe not yet.

Whatever your current “pit of fire,” it is not your end—it’s the middle. It’s part of your story. Here is where you decide whether your tale will be one of tragedy or triumph.

You can decide to depend upon the might of your Redeemer Jesus Christ, whose strength is more than sufficient for whatever burning pits you face in life.

The adversity you endure now will one day have meaning and value that you could not have done without. Until then, “[Have] faith on the Lord; [have] a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; [have] the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest” (Alma 13:29). He will be with you, even in the fire—even until the end.
