After six exciting months aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut loralohara is scheduled to return to Earth on April 6. While aboard the orbiting lab, O’Hara conducted dozens of science and technology activities that benefit future exploration in space and life on Earth.

O’Hara is among the first astronauts to participate in CIPHER, an investigation which studies psychological and physiological changes humans experience during spaceflight. Collecting data from astronauts on missions of different durations supports the development of ways to protect crew health on long duration missions to the Moon and Mars.🧠🦴

Using a bioprinter, O’Hara worked on BFF Cardiac, which tests bioprinting cardiac tissues in microgravity. Previous studies show higher quality 3D tissues can be printed in microgravity. The results could advance technology for creating replacement organs and tissues. 🫀

O’Hara also participated in space gardening while on station with the Plant Habitat-06 study. Plant Habitat-06 examines how spaceflight can affect a plant’s immune system and overall production. O’Hara tended to tomato plants to help scientists understand how to enhance crop growth and food production for future space missions and on Earth. 🌱🍅
