Most humans don’t think twice about the forces of gravity that keep our feet on the ground. But for scientists working to unlock discoveries and understand diseases, the effects of gravity may be the very variable that hinders scientific breakthroughs. Earth’s gravitational pull can limit research, but the ability to experiment in microgravity aboard the International Space Station allows us to open a new path for human health.

Benefit 4: There are a multitude of experiments in the space station’s microgravity laboratory dedicated to human health in space and on Earth. This includes investigations studying disease treatments, drug development, improvement of medical devices, and so much more.

By eliminating gravity researchers have grown higher quality protein crystals showing promise for the development of disease treatments. In space, researchers can study health conditions that would typically take decades to develop on the ground, leading to an efficient alternative to prepping drugs for clinical trials. Even monitoring the bone loss astronauts face while in microgravity can bring about early detection techniques of osteoporosis for people on Earth.
