St. Francis of Assisi and St. Dominic had a profound friendship.

When St. Francis had spent a forty days fast in honor of Saint Michael, on Mount Alverna, Jesus appeared to him in the form of a seraph and so inflamed his heart, that, as Saint Francis de Sales says: “His soul, the mistress of his body, made use of her power to impress upon it the painful wounds from which she herself suffered.”

In 1216 Dominic met Francis in Rome. He had seen Francis in a vision the night before, and rushed to greet him upon recognizing him. A close friendship formed between them, and to this day Dominicans and Franciscans exchange visits on each other’s founders’ feast days as a sign of unity towards a common goal of the salvation of souls. These two pillars supported the Church from falling into ruin and helped repair what was damaged through authentic reform.
