🚨 Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) will not seek a second term, she announced Tuesday after more than a year of side-stepping questions about her political future.

senatorsinema won in 2018 as a Democrat, becoming the first non-Republican to win an Arizona Senate seat since 1994. She formally left the Democratic Party in 2022 to register as a political independent, telling CNN’s Jake Tapper at the time, “I’ve never fit neatly into any party box. I’ve never really tried. I don’t want to.”

“I believe in my approach, but it’s not what America wants right now,” Sinema said, in a video announcing her decision.

Her exit clears the way for a likely matchup between Republican Kari Lake and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego in a contest that could determine control of the Senate.
