In today's #MusicMonday, I wanted to talk about something a little different by talking about Black Music, specifically the origins of Hip Hop and how I've navigated being an artist and scholar in this space. Here are a few takeaways. .
.
✔️1. As a predominantly white Hip Hop artist and scholar, I felt it was necessary to dedicate time learning about a culture that isn't necessarily mine. Although I identified with the struggle and other aspects of my mixed identity, it didn't mean I was exempt from doing this work. I think this is important for all non-black artists participating in Hip Hop culture to do. This is critical difference between appreciating a culture vs. appropriating it. .
.
✔️2. Hip Hop was started in the late 70's/early 80's in the South Bronx, New York by predominantly Black youth. Puerto Rican's also vastly contributed to the culture during this time. I think I may make another video summarizing the origins of Hip Hop that documents the social and political climate it was born in. .
.
✔️3. Hip Hop is the evolution of many other forms of Black music. Pretty much every form of popular music today can be traced back to Black origins - R&B, jazz, blues, soul, funk, rock, etc. Sampling of these other genres has been instrumental to Hip Hop production. .
.
.
Literary Resources that have informed my work (some of were mentioned in the video): 📖1. "Can't Stop, Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation" by Jeff Chang. .
📖2. "New York Ricans from the Hip Hop Zone" by Raquel Z. Rivera. .
📖3. "Funk: The Music, The People, and The Rhythm of The One" By Rickey Vincent.
.
📖4. "Blues People: Negro Music in White America" by Leroi Jones. .
📖5. "The Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When We Talk About Hip Hop--and Why It Matters" by Tricia Rose. .
📖6. "From Black Power to Hip Hop: Racism, Nationalism, and Feminism" by Patricia Hill Collins.
