I've seen seen people with "Assata Taught Me" shirts before and for good reason; We all have something to learn from Assata and her autobiography is a great starting point. 📖 Therefore, this #LitTuesday is dedicated to "Assata: An Autobiography" 📖
.
.
The 21 chapters alternate between Assata sharing stories from her upbringing and her highly publicized court case where she was charged with murdering a New Jersey State Trooper. The juxtaposition between the two time periods in her life constantly inform each other and the complexity of Assata. .
.
Something this book demonstrates is how racism manifests in different situations. Of course there's the more obvious racism such as the racial slurs and violence Assata endured at the hands of corrupt police, but we also see the less obvious forms. One example is a school teacher Assata reflects back on - She talked about how this teacher insulted her and her classmates, rendering them incapable of being able to appreciate fine music when in reality the tracher was projecting her own musical tastes as superior. Microagressions like these that Assata experienced over her life would ultimately shape her consciousness and rebellious spirit as one of the great Black Revolutionaries of our time.
.
.
There is so much that could be said about Assata and her autobiography could be read many times over while still revealing new info but this is just a taste to start the convo.
.
.
.
Have you read this book? What did you take away? What related literature would you recommend?
