“I think a lot of people don't realize that when you come here, you really change. I've been here for almost a whole year, and [when] I went back home for winter break, everyone [was] like, ‘You just look different, you are acting different’. I feel like that’s the most beneficial thing that this program really provides - you're a completely transformed person. It's life-changing.”

Rose Patricia ‘25, a fashion design major at Lorenzo de’ Medici on Marist’s branch campus in Florence, Italy is just getting started. In the Fall of 2021, the freshman packed up her things and embarked from her home in New Jersey to a four year adventure in Florence. After partaking in Milan Fashion Week and spending her nineteenth birthday in the city of her dreams, Paris, she never looked back.

“[Marist] helped me a lot [to] discover what kind of path I want to go down with design. All my life, I thought I was going to go into women's wear, and now I'm transitioning over to menswear, which I never thought in my entire life that I would do. So it's a really exciting journey to go on when people are encouraging you, and [you’re] surrounded by other artists here and other designers. It's just so motivating.”

Despite her time in Florence just beginning, Rose already has big plans to use her passion for design to honor the people back home that shaped her into the person she is today.

“My main goal, is just to make a lot of people back home proud. I basically grew up in the restaurant industry. Actually, I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to fly home for Christmas, and [the] restaurant that I work in back home made a donation jar to get me back. They are a huge part of my life, and I can say my dream is that I want to have a culinary line dedicated to them. They're my biggest support, so I just really want to show them [that] I can actually do this.”
