“I think what makes [going abroad] such an incredible experience is you get to step outside of your comfort zone. If it's not a little scary, it's probably not worth doing. It's the unknown and not having every moment be scripted - to me, that's the appeal.”

During the week of March 21st, students studying abroad at Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, Italy vigorously prepared for the midterm week of their Spring semester. Across the world, another member of the Marist community was preparing for adventure, stepping foot on Marist’s branch campus for the very first time. This person was President Weinman.

The Red Fox Features team was fortunate enough to photograph him while he was there and chat with him about his journey when he returned back to Poughkeepsie.

“[It’s important to] recognize that everybody's a little hesitant, especially if you're going to a place where you don't speak the language. I think those skills that you develop, 'Where's the grocery store? How do I ask for this? What if I get lost? Where's the train station?,' build character, maturity, and it gets us out of our bubble a little bit.”

After meeting numerous Marist students during his week in Florence, he highlighted some of the benefits that studying abroad can bring, but emphasized that it’s all about each individual experience.

“[Do] I recommend students go abroad or not? The obvious answer is yes, because I think it's such an incredible experience. Learning how to live, travel, communicate, and explore new cultures, it's a really remarkable experience. However, I also don't want our students to feel like they have to do it. There are many reasons to immerse yourself on campus in New York, as well. I think it's a person-by-person consideration. But for those who are curious, those who are adventurous and eager to do it, I say, jump in with both feet.”
