ℛ𝑒𝒹 ℱ𝑜𝓍 ℱ𝑒𝒶𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒𝓈 🦊 “It's literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity being here and having access to so many places [that] I don't think will ever happen again.”

Sam Piroh ’23 never intended to go abroad. In fact, just over a year ago, she had no passport and never traveled outside of the United States. However, when she made the decision to come to Marist’s branch campus in Florence, Italy for the spring of her junior year, Sam never looked back and bravely embraced the unfamiliar territory head-on.

“When I was growing up, I would go to New York City almost every weekend to take a dance class, [and] I kind of go back to that mindset now. I was there so much that I knew exactly where I was going every time, and that's kind of what it is. I currently think of that time in my life where I would go somewhere unfamiliar that wasn't home.”

But now instead of the busy New York City streets, Sam has a new familiar route.

“I literally walk by the Duomo every single day,” she laughs, “so it’s very different, but in the best way.”

Reflecting on it now, Sam hopes to be a role model to anyone with similar hesitancies.

“I thought this was the most insane idea. I never thought this was possible. And I'm literally here right now, and [have been] for a month. I've already done multiple trips [and] have some planned at the end [of the semester], but I hope people actually read [this] and [think] ‘she did it’.”
