Actor Christina Applegate announced Tuesday that she had been misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a condition she believed she had for more than five years.

Applegate has been outspoken about her symptoms, and while the revelation is shocking to many fans who've been following her journey, misdiagnosis is not uncommon.

"It's unfortunately quite common. Statistically speaking, about one in five people who carry a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis may actually have been misdiagnosed and have an alternative explanation for their symptoms," said Dr. Elena Grebenciucova, who specializes in the disease at Northwestern Medicine.
