Repost // “This novel was absolutely beautiful. Set in the Caribbean following the 1834 Emancipation Act (a time and place in history I was unfamiliar with), we follow Rachel, a formerly enslaved woman as she travels across Barbados and across the Caribbean in search of her stolen children.

This book was heartbreaking at times and hopefully at others. It was a beautiful story of a mother’s love and the lasting effects of slavery on families for generations. I’d definitely recommend this book, and make sure you don’t skip the author’s note at the end. I thought it added so much to the story to hear about the author’s own family history and the ways she discovered how these events are still affecting people in the Caribbean.

Note: I listened to this book on audio and the narrator was fantastic. Her voice work and dialects really added to the sense of place.

Have you read this book? What did you think?”
