It’s always a good day to make Elizabeth Zott’s brownies — especially when it’s a bad day.

📸 Repost thekneadtoread // 🧪 Elizabeth Zott’s Brownies 🧪 “Is she really making brownies for dinner?” “She’s having a bad day.”
🧪
"’I make brownies on my bad days‘ Elizabeth confessed. ‘I’m not going to pretend that sucrose is an essential ingredient required for our well-being, but I personally feel better when I eat it. Now let's get started.’”
🧪
Elizabeth Zott (I don’t make the rules, you need to say her whole name) is a chemist. She’s also a woman in the 1960s. You can quickly figure out how this plot plays out. The plot twist is her eventually being the host of a cooking show. When she refuses to give in to the pressure to play the sexy housewife and she treats her viewers at home like the capable and intelligent beings they are, the majority of which are woman who care for their households, her show explodes in popularity. Turns out, women are smart and capable!!! 🙃 At it’s core, this book is about beung abandoned or hurt by the communities that are supposed to embrace and protect - whether that community is general society, nuclear families, the scientific community, or religious community. To vibe with the book you need to adjust your mindset to the 60s and understand why Elizabeth Zott had to be so hardheaded.
🧪
I liked it a lot. Obviously I had to make brownies, even though I wasn’t having a bad day. I made brownie cookies and brownies with walnuts in them (because Elizabeth Zott told me “walnuts contain an unusually high level of vitamin E in the form of gamma-tocopherol…proven to protect the heart” so I said “ok” and added them into my batter.) Then I made some chemistry stencils and used powdered sugar for the designs! Easy way to customize brownies!
🧪
Last note on the book is that it includes probably the best pet/dog character I’ve read in a LONG time. I’d die for Six-thirty 🐶!!!
