I have to admit, I didn’t know much about ‘The Motherhood Penalty’ before starting The MOB with B, and I definitely didn’t realise it was a formal term! 

Some may think I’ve been hiding under a rock but the reality is that I have been busy being a mum, getting through each day, one at a time.

I'm also a ‘SEN’ mum which means I have a child with 'Special Educational Needs’. FYI the SEN system is a total minefield, it's hellish to navigate, but my child is wonderful so we work through it together as a family.

Anyway, for those who are unfamiliar with the term 'Motherhood Penalty’, it is a term used to describe the discrimination and bias that women can face in the workplace as a result of their status as mothers, and the resulting loss of wealth (remuneration, pensions and investments) from taking time away form the paid labour force to raise children. 

In short, mums and their families are being penalised socio-economically for raising children, the future taxpayers and savers of this gorgeous bloomin' world. WTF. 

And I am a victim of circumstance from ‘The Motherhood Penalty’ because I have been unable to go back to traditional employment due to my family’s care needs. 

Everyone’s circumstances are individual, but no one is alone in being affected, directly or indirectly. Sadly we are all likely to feel it's sticky, sickly tendrils at some point.

So wouldn’t it be amazing if we could challenge it daily with information and actions, to one day eliminate this ‘penalty’ and close the wealth gap?

It is ambitious, but this is the MOB’s mission. So we’re going to give it our best shot!
