"That loving a person means letting them change when they need to. And letting them go when they need to. And that doesn't make them any less of a home. Just maybe not one for you. Or only for a season or two. But that doesn't mean diminish the love. It just changes forms." - Tan

"Memorial" is a queer love-hate relationship story. Ben and Mike narrated their past and present stories, talking about their relationships, career choices, family issues, and society in general. The stagnant long-term relationship made their life miserable while they were dealing with other matters. What I loved the most from this book is the diversity of characters. Unfortunately, I couldn't relate to them as much as I wanted to. However, I understand it is essential to have more books like this in the market. It's an excellent book for thoughtful discussions and unique topics.

I questioned some of the cultural aspects of the story. For instance, when Mike was in Japan, I thought the conversation between young customers and Mike's dad, Eiju, was uncommon and impolite (page 138). This Japanese couple used profanity in front of their elder—I was scratching my head. I always thought that respecting elders is a typical Japanese norm. Was it because they were at the bar?! It didn't seem right. I might have missed some details because it's hard to read without quotation marks. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Overall, I neither loved nor disliked this book. The no quotation mark style didn't stop me from finishing. Does it deserve a memorial? I am not sure.
