So very excited that thekneadtoread loved our #gmabookclub book #memorial and made these incredible book-inspired donuts!
🍩 Mochi Donuts for Mitsuko 🍩 Thank you so much to gmabookclub for sending me #memorial by #bryanwashington!

This book feels like an intimate peak into a commmmmplicated relationship. While the writing style takes a beat to get used to (no quotation marks really threw me for a bit), it slowly immerses you into the lives of the characters. It starts looking at the relationship from Benson’s POV, then switches to his boyfriend, Mike’s POV about halfway through the book, and then ends with Benson’s. My only issue is I was #teambenson, and was a little salty upon getting to Mike’s section (I didn’t like him) but my heart started to soften about 3/4 into his chapters. At least his departure left us with more Mitsuko air time (his mom and my fave character).
🍩
This book talks about *context* and how an event is never just that one moment but everything around it counts as well. I think that’s the point of this whole book, because a relationship isn’t really ONLY two people but our families and experiences are brought into it. And, sometimes, that can make things dang near impossible. Benson and Mike had complicated relationships with their respective fathers and that conflict was brought into their fights, how they approach each other, and how they show love.
🍩
There was TONS of savory food mentioned in this book (legit there was a half a page list of all the food Mike cooked his dad 😂) but donuts were mentioned in the beginning and I couldn’t get them out of my head. I could imagine Mitsuko teaching Benson how to fry these bad boys up! I made the Japanese-American version of Mochi Donuts! They are squishy, bouncy and easy to make once you secure the ingredients. Honestly, who doesn’t love a donut? #Recipe ➡️ when you swipe!
