In #FiftyWordsForRain, an illegitimate child of a Japanese aristocrat and her African American lover, Nori is an outcast from birth. Although her grandparents take her in, they keep her hidden in their attic, afraid of a blemish on the royal bloodline. Nori obediently accepts her life, despite her persistent curiosity about what lies outside the attic. But when her older half-brother arrives at the estate, the siblings form an unlikely but powerful bond.⁣

Offering a unique perspective, this is a coming-of-age, historical fiction novel that couldn't be more timely.⁣
⁣
Set against the backdrop of a changing post-WWII Japan, #AshaLemmie examines race, belonging, familial and societal expectations, culture, resilience, freedom, and love. Although the story starts off within the confines of the attic, her physical boundaries gradually expand in tandem with her emotional development and accumulation of experiences.⁣
⁣
In the Japanese culture (and in many other cultures), great importance is placed on "saving face" and keeping one's honour. It is not surprising, then, that Nori is made to think that she’s dispensable and unworthy because of her status as an illegitimate child who is biracial, has "exotic" features and darker-coloured skin -- all of which make her an extreme form of "the other" in Japan. It is through her relationship with her brother that she realizes the need to carve out a space for herself, even when others try to diminish her existence.⁣
⁣
Lemmie’s ability to influence readers to empathize even with despicable characters shows her acute understanding of the human condition. It’ll be difficult to remain indifferent to the events that occur, and it doesn't matter that I disagree with the characters’ choices; it is easy to criticize the actions of others, without considering the range of factors that are in play in any given situation.
