The Vanishing Half • Brit Bennett

Rating: 4.5/5 “You could live a life this way, split. As long as you knew who was in charge.” What. A. Story. This book was incredible. I read it in two sittings and could not put it down. It’s the story of identical twin girls raised in a rural black Louisiana community before running away together at the age of 16. Although once inseparable, both girls must forge new lives and identities for themselves which takes them on completely different paths.

Every character in this story wanted to be someone else, and some took steps to hide a part of who they were forever. Desiree, who was forced to return to a home she spent so long trying to escape. Jude, who was an outcast because of the darkness of her skin. Stella, whose entire life was built upon a lie. Reese, who was never accepted for who he was by his family or community.

Brit Bennett is a beautiful writer, and she’s a master at seamlessly transporting you through different time periods and weaving together the narratives of so many characters. I’ve added her other book, The Mothers, to my reading list.

I loved this book. I would have rated it 5 stars but the ending left me feeling so sad.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
