🥇 After putting on a thrilling performance in the men’s cycling road race, Richard Carapaz won Ecuador’s first gold medal of the Tokyo Games on Saturday 🥇

Contending with sweltering heat, and a grueling final climb, Carapaz broke away in the final 10 kilometers to drop the remaining challengers and earn only the second gold medal in Ecuador’s history.

There was a sprint finish behind the 28-year-old to decide the two remaining medals, with Belgium’s Wout van Aert narrowly taking silver ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. (📷 Michael Steele/Getty Images)
