We can tell our kids how important it is to do hard things and we can coach them through scary situations but actions will always speak louder than words and leading by example can be the most powerful lesson of all. Holy $#!t I’m so proud of myself for doing that and I’m sure the kids could FEEL my nervousness and then my confidence. This was NOT in the plans for the day. In fact I kind of assumed I would never do a back flip on a snowboard again as I was a teenager the last time I remember doing one. We started building the jump and I had planned on giving Aubrin Sage the honors of ‘first hit’ as there is nothing quite like taking flight and then landing in deep untouched powder… …but when I realized just how much snow had accumulated I began thinking about trying a back flip and once those intrusive thoughts took over there was no turning back. I told Aubrin I was going to try a backflip and she immediately said ‘WHAT!? Don’t break your arm!” As I hiked up the run-in I kept thinking about how bad of timing it was to do something risky. We’ve got so many amazing winter travel and snowboard plans that could all be jeopardized by an early season mid-hap. But I felt a confidence I haven’t had in years. I don’t know if it was because of all the trampoline back flips this summer or wanting to be an example to the kids but I was feeling it, went for it it and rode away on my second try! Based on her comment I think she considers me a @redbull athlete now.😂 And then Aubrin practiced launching into pow landings (which is really tricky, a lot like landing in water) which will be a great skill to add to her pow riding ability as she starts integrating natural hits/jumps into her lines I’m 18 months shy of 40 and finding that child like stoke and appreciation all over again since having kids! So much fun has already happened this season and we haven’t even rode a chairlift yet! #DadStoke
