Nebraska’s nine-match home stretch is over, and the top-ranked Huskers are heading into one of the Big Ten’s most difficult environments with a chance to measure their continued growth.

Nebraska travels to Penn State this week after an unbeaten start built on dominant defense, a deep middle attack and a team that coach Dani Busboom Kelly believes is becoming more confident by the week.

The Huskers lead the nation in opponent hitting percentage, a number libero Olivia Mauch credits to the connection between Nebraska’s block and backcourt defense.

“The block is the first line of defense,” Mauch said. “For us to be able to set up behind it, it’s so crucial for them to be in a good spot.”

Nebraska’s defensive system has limited opponents throughout the early season, while its offense has continued to evolve around setter Bergen Reilly and a group of middle blockers Reilly calls the best in the country.

The group’s impact goes beyond kills and blocks, Reilly said. Nebraska’s middles create opportunities for its outside hitters by holding blockers, getting touches and becoming viable transition options when the Huskers are out of system.

“It really is just a whole team effort to be able to get the middles going,” Reilly said. “They’re tough to stop.”

Senior middle blocker Andi Jackson remains at the center of that attack. Jackson is hitting .490, but Busboom Kelly said that efficiency carries added weight because Nebraska is asking her to do much more than a traditional middle.

Jackson was named the AVCA National Player of the Week on Tuesday after earning the Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Nebraska looks for Jackson in transition, gives her high balls out of system and uses her from multiple attacking locations.

“We force the ball to Andi from all over,” Busboom Kelly said. “Andi gets set high balls now out of system. So she’s doing a lot for us that middles in other programs aren’t necessarily asked to do.”

Reilly said the senior’s expanded range has been built through years of work. Nebraska’s setters and middles spend time together daily in practice, and the Huskers have continued adding options, including middle attacks toward the right side in transition.

The trip to Penn State brings a different kind of test. The Nittany Lions feature physical attackers, including Kennedy Martin, and a loud home environment that both Reilly and Mauch said will challenge Nebraska.

“They have a lot of hitters that you can’t really put one tendency on,” Reilly said. “You have to just be ready to defend anything.”

Busboom Kelly said Penn State is “completely different” from last season after adding transfers and freshmen who have played key roles. She sees value in testing Nebraska away from Lincoln, especially as the Huskers begin a conference schedule she believes is deeper than a year ago.

“There’s a lot of teams that are nowhere near right now, but I think they’re going to be in December,” Busboom Kelly said. “That’s pretty exciting for the league.”

She said playing in a hostile road gym helps prepare Nebraska for the NCAA Tournament, where teams must be comfortable in uncomfortable moments.

“It’s not going to be comfortable playing there,” Busboom Kelly said. “You’ve got to figure out how to be great, even when we might not be feeling the best or feeling the crowd in a way that’s helping us.”

Nebraska’s players say they have not reached their ceiling despite the unbeaten record. Mauch said the Huskers have been pushed, even in wins, and have maintained an internal standard that does not allow them to get caught up in outside attention.

“Just because we won a game doesn’t mean we played our best,” Mauch said. “There’s a lot more upside to this team.”
