No. 1 Nebraska opened Big Ten play with a sweep Friday night, beating Rutgers 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers improved to 12-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Harper Murray led Nebraska with 15 kills, while Andi Jackson added 14 kills on .632 hitting and four blocks. Bergen Reilly had 39 assists as the Huskers hit .320 as a team and held Rutgers to a .137 hitting percentage.

Nebraska pulled away in the third set after Rutgers kept the first two tight. The Scarlet Knights led late in the second before the Huskers closed the set, then Nebraska took control in the final frame to finish the sweep.

“I thought Rutgers played really well tonight and did some really good things,” Nebraska coach Dani Busboom Kelly said. “It just took us a little bit to adjust to that. But I thought we battled really well.”

Busboom Kelly said Nebraska improved defensively as the match moved along. She also pointed to a rotation featuring Laney Choboy serving behind Murray, Jackson and Reilly as a consistent advantage for the Huskers.

“Her serve sets it up great,” Busboom Kelly said. “Then we’ve got three of our seniors, most experienced players, in the front row. We’ve got to always be able to count on that.”

Choboy finished with a team-high 15 digs and one ace. Busboom Kelly praised the senior’s willingness to embrace a defensive specialist role this season.

“She’s playing the best of her career,” Busboom Kelly said. “No matter what she’s doing or what color jersey she’s wearing, she’s playing the best of her career.”

Murray said Rutgers provided a stronger challenge than the final score may indicate.

“They played really well,” Murray said. “We wanted to come out in that third set and make it quicker, obviously, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they played really well.”

Nebraska’s coach expects the competition to only increase as conference play continues.

“The Big Ten is going to be a gauntlet like it always is,” Busboom Kelly said. “I do think it’s a step above from last year.”

The Huskers host Ohio State on Saturday at 8 p.m. before opening a two-match road trip next week at Penn State and Maryland.
