When No. 1 Nebraska needed a replacement for Big Ten Player of the Week, middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie, on Wednesday night, Kenna Cogill did not have much time to prepare.

The sophomore middle blocker learned she would start against No. 20 Creighton shortly before first serve. She responded with one of the most efficient performances of her young Husker career.

Cogill had eight kills on 11 swings without an error, hitting .727, as Nebraska swept Creighton 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 before a program-record indoor home crowd of 15,405 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. She added two blocks and nine points.

“Right before the match, she told us in the locker room, and I was like, ‘Okay,’” Cogill said.

The start came with Ogbechie sidelined by illness, but it was another example of the depth Nebraska has developed in the middle. Cogill also started at South Dakota State earlier this season when Andi Jackson was unavailable.

Nebraska head coach Dani Busboom Kelly said Cogill’s work behind the scenes made Wednesday’s breakout performance possible.

“Kenna works hard, comes in every day, does her job and waits her turn,” Busboom Kelly said. “Played like a senior, and she acted like one, which is even more impressive.”

Cogill helped Nebraska control the net against its in-state rival. The Huskers held Creighton to a minus-.033 hitting percentage and swept the Bluejays for the second straight season.

Creighton coach Brian Rosen said his team expected a challenge regardless of which Nebraska middle stepped onto the court.

“Their entire bench is the number one recruit of every class, so we don’t ever think if they put in a sub of any kind, that’s like, ‘Oh, well, this will be an easy night,’” Rosen said.

That depth includes Jackson, Cogill, Ogbechie and freshman Keoni Williams. Jackson, the reigning AVCA Middle Blocker of the Year, said the competition within the group raises everyone’s level.

“Me as a senior to Kenna, Manaia, Keoni as a freshman, it is just, the talent is so insane,” Jackson said. “Iron sharpens iron, and so we’re pushing each other every single day, and I think that it’s really pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves.”

For Cogill, who redshirted in her first season at Nebraska, the performance came in the building where she had watched the program from the stands a year earlier.

Now, she has a signature performance in front of the largest indoor home crowd in Nebraska volleyball history.

The 8-0 Huskers return to the Devaney Center on Friday to host No. 25 North Carolina. First serve is at 7 pm CST and will be televised on Big Ten Network.
